Why do people often vote against their own interests?

This is a must-read story from the BBC News.  It discusses why the Republicans are gaining grounds against the Democrats when people should be running to the Democratic Party with open arms.  Unfortunately, it shows just how uneducated the American population is.  My favorite quote, by author Thomas Frank: "It's like a French Revolution in reverse in which the workers come pouring down the street screaming more power to the aristocracy."
